DATABASE = Rolodex, list of names that we can have the computer select and sort the information for us. A Database is a Base of Data. Simple, right? A Base is one centralized location, and data is information. So a Database is a central location for holding information. So for a huge office instead of everyone having their individual Rolodex with names and addresses, we store those names and addresses in a database. That way if someone calls and changes their address, instead of only one person writing it in their Rolodex it, is changed in the database for all to see and share.
Field: 1 piece of information, address and city, state zip are 4 separate fields.
Record: Information about 1 thing, as in Records about people.
One record is about one person. A collection of fields.
Table: a collection of Records.
Database: Related Tables.
Tuple??
A Database main purpose is to make it easy to:
A Relational database still has files for students and classes but adds a third file to relate the two together. One student can take many classes, and a single class can have many students. This is accomplished with a third file to relate the two together.
1 to many (many to 1)
many to many relationships can't be dealt with easily,
so we have two different 1 to many relationships.
NAME -< HAS >- CLASS
Reading right to left we can see that 1 name has many classes,
or reading left to right we see 1 class has many names.
